Q+A with Unearthed.co founder, Chloe Taylor

Fashion enthusiast, skin care junkie, and do-gooder, get to know Unearthed.co's founder and CEO, Chloe Taylor!

HOW DID THE IDEA OF UNEARTHED.CO COME ABOUT?

It was actually my dissertation piece in my final year of uni. I studied Fashion Marketing and Branding, and we had to do a TON of research and testing to come up with a brand that solves a real world issue. I've always had an interest around sustainability from like the age of 9 when we had a guest speaker come in at school who told us all, if everyones bin bags in the world were stacked on top of each other, they'd reach the moon and back. That scared me A LOT at the age of 9, and I've been conscious about my decisions since then. So I researched Sustainability rather deeply, and found that veganism is probably the best thing you can do for the environment, your health and for the animals (obvs). So I turned Vegan... & in doing so I found out the hard way when I was switching out all of my products that just because something says its vegan, its not always true. So that's when I came up with the idea of Unearthed.co as a solution. An online site where anyone can shop beauty and fashion products and be rest assured they've all been certified vegan before being listed on the site.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

A lot of people, I get my inspiration from a lot of different places. My main source of inspiration has to be my mum though, she didn't have the best upbringing, lived on a council estate, surrounded by drug dealers and the types of people who were on the wrong path in life. She didn't have everything handed to her on a plate and so she learnt the value of money from really earning it. she worked from the age of 15, joined the RAF and worked so damn hard that she got herself out of the living conditions she was in. She's since raised me with that same work ethic and has supported all of my endeavours and encouraged me to do what I want to do, so long as it makes me happy. I couldn't ask for a better mum.

I also have a lot of respect for opinion leaders within this whole climate change debarcle. One of which being Greta Thunberg. I wish I was as switched on as a child as she is, but as I wasn't quite at that level, I like to think I'm making up for it with Unearthed.co by changing the way people view veganism, & making it more accessible.

BEST ADVICE YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN?

To live life to the fullest every day, because no day is guaranteed. collect memories not materialistic things, to travel, explore different interests until you find something you love and LEARN, as much as you possibly can.

BIGGEST MISTAKE YOU'VE MADE? DID YOU LEARN FROM IT?

I think the biggest mistake I've made is putting so much pressure on myself to be perfect. Especially in uni... because I was trying to impress my lecturers and not myself. But fast forward a year from then to where we are now, and I'm working for myself, so none of it really mattered anyway. I think in hindsight my take away is this: At the time, these kind of things feel like your whole future is riding on it. The same can be said about social media likes/followers etc. We get SO caught up on numbers that it becomes an obsession where we feel as though we need to be on top of our game 24/7 due to fear of falling behind and not being where we should be. The truth of the matter is, it doesn't really matter a whole lot; a month from now, 6 months from now, a year, 10 years, the thing you're getting so worked up over today will be forgotten about or learnt from. Go easy on yourself.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE SETTING UP YOUR OWN BRAND?

Ummm probably that it was during a global pandemic... we had sooo many set backs because of this. Also I started setting it up straight out of uni and whilst uni is great, its all theoretical. Its so easy to write in your dissertation that you'll secure £40,000 from a crowdfunder, but in reality, you have to create your promotional video, and market this yourself and very rarely, unless you can convert a lot of traffic to the crowdfunder page will you secure such funds... its little things like this I think that was most difficult to come to terms with and figuring out how you will make it work if plan A doesn't work out, but I guess its just learning on the job.

ADVICE TO ANYONE STARTING THEIR OWN BRAND?

Get comfortable with hearing the word NO, because believe me you will hear it A LOT. The moment you do this, you will be invincible. Secondly, stop putting it off and just START, money just sitting in your account will never grow, invest it in your future and what will make you happy long-term.
